For more in depth information on these buildings, please see the Locations Page.

This should be part of the settings page. Please get that written up and I will code it from there. The map should never be replaced and should be included as part of the settings page along with all the information on the locations within the town, including info on the buildings. If it seems like too much info, again, it needs to be simplified. -RM

Currently inaccessible due to impact quake damage done to the tubes between the sides.
A long time ago, a group of scientists from found habitable planet in a distant part of the galaxy. The human race was continuously expanding and needed more and more room, so a group of settlers was sent to inhabit this new world. Unfortunately for them, when they got there, there was nothing but rubble.

The light from the world that had reached Earth didn't reflect its current state: utterly destroyed. What used to be a planet was now an asteroid belt.

Their salvation came in the form of a mysterious artifact called The Sands of Space-Time. Or at least, that's what they called it. The shape of it was indistinct at first, even though they arrived right near it, but it quickly began to form a familiar shape: that of an hourglass, with the hourglass surrounded by two large stone discs. Trees--impossibly from earth--grew on top of each disc. And even more impossible, considering how small the discs were, the strength of gravity was the same as it was on Earth.

There's still no unifying theory on how it was possible, but the people settled on one of the discs, not having any other options to return home to Earth. While they had enough to start farming, there wasn't enough materials to start making much of a home.

Until there suddenly was.

One night, they went to sleep with the hourglass top nearly empty of sand--and the next morning, a world had sprung up around the disc that they lived on, the sand completely reset to the top. It was sudden and it was brilliant, just as thin as the disk but it stretched on for miles, and it had everything they needed. They could mine for whatever they needed from the underneath of the world, while they could hunt, gather, and collect from the top. Periodically, the worlds would collapse into a smallish orb that they would call a "seed", and they would be sent off to other stars, presumably to do.. something.

Slowly, they were able to build a future. First one skyscraper, then another, until there were six in total with their cultural center as a gleaming mass of hope in the middle of the city. A tram system was run in all six of the points once the hourglass's movements were better understood. The other disc became their industrial center, allow the air pollution to stay away from their homes. Thus, worlds around the home disc remained lighter and the worlds around the industrial disc became dark and more barren. They went from surviving to thriving in their new home, happily exploring the worlds that it created for them. Shields that they didn't understand protected them from wayward asteroids and from things in the world coming onto the Central Discs, allowing only harmless ones through so that they'd have something to pick up off the ground for fun and inspection. They even found out, happily so, that the hourglass would revive people that died accidentally or through tragic circumstances, so that no one ever had to live a short life.

They found out the hard way that the shields their home created couldn't stop every meteor. Not the largest of them. It had come during the middle of the day, breaking through the shield and streaking across the sky. The asteroid took out the Houston Skyscraper and slammed through the ground, and into the hourglass itself. Everyone that died that day remained dead and the worlds around the disc decayed away, as the hourglass repaired itself and the hole left in the disc. The hole has still not fully closed, and debris that fell through it now orbits around the center of the hourglass in an artificial planetary ring.

It was not able to reverse the effects of time while damaged, so it did the only other thing it could: it brought in help. New people are just beginning to arrive, pulled from other times and spaces, each of them able to bring their own sliver of hope back to a city still reeling from the loss of so many.

As they bury most of their dead and clear the destruction of one of their homes, the cycle of worlds has currently paused. And it is now that your character finds themselves suddenly awake in a world that isn't their own.

Game FAQ

Apr. 24th, 2016 11:42 am
6/13/16- Here's a skeleton of FAQ Questions you can add onto.

-RM

Answers both IC AND OOC questions??

Lots of stuff.

PROCESSING CENTER
-Where you wake up. You will get a lot of information really quickly, informational packet, etc.

-We should probably have an IC informational packet? Or at least the contents summarized?

STARTER HOME
-You get a decent penthouse to start.
-Vocational training if you're not used to this stuff
-You can look up stuff online about various things
-Characters who aren't used to technology will be given accelerated classes... or if they wish, they can just have the information written into their brains.
-Work placement, apprenticeship
-Give you an overview of the general locations, you've got a map app on your phone

Don't go into the meat of the detail about the homes or setting here. Go into detail on the housing / setting page, but remember --even over there-- to keep the descriptions brief and to the point. The less someone has to read about any given thing, and the more freedom they have to add their character's personal tastes and touches to the homes, the better.
-RM

F.A.Q.

Here's where the FAQ questions will go when they're done and organized; feel free to do everything in the google doc and then we'll paste it here.

This is the whole IC to OOC calendar thing.

Might decide how many days OOCly pass before IC day change.

GOOGLE CALENDAR INSERT FROM PULSEMODS.
Here's how AC works.

Light AC because this is a community.

Gonna design the game so people don't have to rely on others if they don't wanna. So it should be a simple AC like check-in or 5 comments.

RULES

Apr. 24th, 2016 11:36 am

RULES

⏏ This is a private, invite-only game. If you have not been invited or approved by the mods, you cannot join. We’re incredibly sorry for any inconveniences or misconceptions.

⏏ It is the player’s responsibility --not the mods’-- to go through the Starter’s Guide and make sure they have joined all the comms, reviewed all the info pages, and have filled out all necessary information and posted it on the Taken/Player Contact Page and Housing Page. Likewise, if a player decides to drop, it is their responsibility to comment on the drop page and/or alert their game mates in the OOC Comm.

⏏ Stay IC! There are no ifs, ands, or buts. Keep all the attention to detail and to canon that you would in a publicly scrutinized, application-based game.

⏏ IC =/= OOC. The actions/thoughts/words of a character are not shared by the player; keep this in mind, particularly with characters that are canonically unsavory, harsh, or disrespectful. If you are unsure of whether this divide is in place, please speak with the player in question. Hopefully that will clear things up. If not, see two rules below.

⏏ Don’t wank for the sake of wanking. If you have true concerns regarding the game, please be responsible and communicate with other players and/or contact the mods. We promise to keep whatever is shared completely confidential.

⏏ Treat all players in the game with tact and respect at all times; because player safety comes first, harassment will not be tolerated.

⏏ There is no “modesty/maturity” cap on the contents of posts within the NSFW comm. Because of this, it's mandatory to post warnings and cuts on the NSFW Comm page so that no one is unjustly triggered. Likewise, post warnings before the content of logs in the Log Comm as well.

If things take an NC-17 turn within a thread in the Network or Log community, please post a continuation link for your RP partner and start a continuation within the NSFW Comm.

⏏ Avoid consistent and constant thread dropping. Attempt to keep up with your posts and threads, even if it takes a while! We highly endorse and encourage backtagging!*

⏏ Please don’t character squat. If you know you can’t commit to them, please post to the drop page.*

⏏ Do not change the thoughts, feelings, actions, or words of a character that is not your own. That is godmodding. Not even once.

⏏ Unless it’s IC (such as typing out an accent), please use proper spelling and grammar in all your posts and tags. Occasional typos are fine, but reckless writing is not! *

⏏ Please ask those already involved in a thread if you can threadjack before you jump in. If you really want to jump into that conversation but the others don’t, remember this: unless a post/thread is marked as “private” (in a way from which your character is excluded), they can eavesdrop on the conversation, then hit up the poster about what’s been said in their own individual thread. Everyone can have their cake and eat it too!*

If you find anyone knowingly breaking these rules, please report it to a mod.

The player in question will be spoken to, and if they are indeed guilty, will be given up to two warnings (in the case of harassment/wank, they will only be given one). If the player does not desist and start to follow the rules, upon any third report, they will be notified and their characters will be removed and blocked from the comms.

We doubt there will be a problem with rule breaking, as most of this is common sense and boils down to logical courtesy. However, we want everyone to be on the same page in terms of standards and player protections.

Happy gaming!

* These rules don’t have a big enough hand in player standards and safety to share the same repercussions as the not-so-misdemeanor rules. The worse we’ll do with these is give a friendly poke and alert the player to their oopsies. After all, we can’t learn from our mistakes if we’re not aware of them!

Network

Apr. 24th, 2016 11:21 am
HERE IS HOW THE NETWORK WORKS.

Ya'll got smartphones. They gave you decent ones upon arrival because holy shit new people must insert safely. We're going to simplify things because keeping track of 10 million ways to communicate is gonna be waaaay too much.

You've got the usual public network--or well, let's just assume that they have a public group that's just for the newcomers.

You can private chat message a group or a single person. You can send pictures, videos, etc. Bandwidth is cheap. These phones can be broken, but your stuff is backed up automatically on a secure cloud server, and you can always get things replaced. And you can access from multiple devices!

Actually, why not make it an application that everyone uses that's new. It's secure, got set up by the government and one of the big companies to try to butter people up. But they can't even get access to your messages if they wanted to! Encryption is key. Hehe. Key. Get it? Wait, no you don't. You don't do PKI stuff. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

NPCs

Apr. 24th, 2016 11:18 am
Here's a list of NPCs.

Owner of multiple upscale restaurants
Mayor
Miners Guild Head
Miners Corp Boss
Economic Council
ETC.

Lots of them are just email only contacts perhaps?

Can be found through searching online.
Sure you get a base apartment and food because no one wants you to starve, but it's pretty bare bones. Your phone is a pretty old model. It works, but not well. At least you get a nice place to live because you're new to the whole social order of things. And healthcare is free.

So you're gonna have to make some money.

Schools, Universities, labs, healthcare, working on the industrial side (don't worry, they'll fix any genetic abnormalities that pop up if you work there!), mining (don't worry, there's lots of safety equipment--and you can keep some of the fancier stuff you find!), engineering work, general businesses, maker lab, restaurants, retail (quick marts, upscale, midscale, walmart), pharmacies, etc. EVERYTHING.

Also a general idea of what eat thing brings in.

Rent is pretty cheap but you're expected to spend that money back into the community!

Apr. 24th, 2016 11:04 am

HERE THERE BE LOTS OF INFO ABOUT RINGWORLD MECHANICS.

There are still many competing hypotheses about the full mechanics of how the ringworlds form, but none of them explain everything in enough detail to become a theory. In other words, "we have no idea how the f$&% it works". It just does. And it's weird.

What is know about the ringworlds is that they're created by the use of the hourglass's sand. When all the sand runs out of the top, it the glass begins to rotate and separates from the two discs on either side. Now free, the sand shoots out and grabs nearby asteroids in the belt, using their raw materials to form worlds--although even then, the raw materials don't seem to add up to the whole. These worlds are small but fully realized ecosystems, dramatically appearing overnight and slowly growing over the course of their lifetimes. Each world's lifetime is finite, and their lifetimes vary. When their lifetime is up, the sand deconstructs the world, creating a small sphere covered in rock that shoots off into parts unknown. There's been limited observations of the process, as the sand clouds the skies and prevents observations throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.

It seems that some of these worlds take cues from the inhabitants, with many of the landscapes familiar and reminiscent of their homeworld, Earth. Sometimes, however, they are completely foreign, and no one quite knows why. All that they know is that the worlds seem to be something that they need, usually just as they need it.

The ringworlds are basically like the very upper crust of a planet, complete with mineral veins and caves running through them. Mining is thus far simpler than on Earth, as the deepest of the veins are exposed to the air. It's incredibly convenient.

**MORE LATER
[PRETTY PICTURE OF HOURGLASS]

The hourglass was the salvation of the [GROUP]. When they arrived to an asteroid belt instead of a world, it was the hourglass that built them what they needed to survive. Some claim they can 'hear' the hourglass. All can feel its warmth. Some have gone so far as to worship it.

When people travel through the transit system between the discs and approaching the hourglass's center, they can feel... something. It's not just reaching the center of gravity, reaching equilibrium, but like coming home. There's a platform built around the center of the hourglass for a reason: not only to have someplace for people to sit if they fall off the sides of the discs, but because it produces the sort of calm that cannot be replicated. It's only temporary, but still wonderful.

Wow, I really need to rewrite this. BUT BASICALLY IT IS REALLY RELAXING. Also we are on an incline so there's a day/night cycle. Or maybe the people made something to do the cycle around the disc? WHO KNOWS.

The Sands of Space-Time are what draw in the asteroids around them and use their material to build the worlds that the residents explore. It responds to their needs and wishes, co-creating a new existence with them. How long it lasts is variable, but usually it is not shorter than it needs to be. The changes are made in the night, as everyone sleeps.

When people die before their time, before their bodies expire due to age, the Sand comes in the night to "fix" their bodies and restore them. The first few times this happened, it was pretty freaky, but the residents got used to not needing to say goodbye to friends too soon. It is because of this that murder is an almost non-existent crime--if your victim sees you, you can be sure that they will be telling the police what you did in a week's time. The only way to successfully kill someone is to not be seen or be unidentifiable.

Recently, the residents have found that the Hourglass can repair itself. However, anyone that dies while it is still not fully healed will not come back from the dead. Thus, during the recent asteroid strike, the residents have learned for the first time in a generation what tragedy is. They are scared and afraid, spooked now that they are reminded of their own mortality.

That is where the newcomers come in--to help rebuild their future and bring back hope.

-MAYBE SAND ALLOWS PEOPLE TO DO STUFF? LIKE WHAT? WHO KNOWS? BITS CAN ESCAPE AND COLLECT.
-Sand changes color
-sand ignores gravity to fall instead of being stuck in middle
-also what is the sand made out of
Northern Disc information will be here.

General stuff. The good stuff will be in maps. OR MAYBE TRANSITION MAPS HERE.

PREMISE

Pulse is a small, invitation-only, private game that runs on the concept of world-building.

Pulse is a strange world divided in to living and business, each aspect built entirely upon large, city-sized disks, located on opposite ends of a sand dial/time turner. Between these discs sits the hourglass, deemed "The Sands of Space and Time" by the residents (or The Sands for short), for that is what it controls: the time and space of the cosmos around it. However, the figurative-turned-literal aesthetics of this world isn't Pulse's most interesting attribute: fractured pieces of other worlds are brought across space and time by The Sands, forming around the city disks.

These visiting worlds are temporary, staying for [days, weeks, varying amounts of time?], The Sands then compact the land masses into "Seeds", which ultimately vanish to parts unknown. No one knows why. Most hold the old belief that the Seeds create a base for new planets to grow from. This believe lead to tradition: rebuilding the visiting worlds.

There's only a small window of time that these worlds can only be explored, exploited, and rebuilt, but it always proved sufficient. The citizens of Pulse were always provided with a plethora of resources, allowing of continuing healthy technological and societal growth.

It was a good life-- until disaster struck. And now, those worlds are not the only ones that need to be rebuilt.

But the Sands can't rebuild anything on its own. So many people perished at once, The Sands became overloaded, its power damaged by the destruction. For the first time, the untimely killed could not be resurrected, and undoing the turmoil is out of The Sands' reach. In the wake of tragedy, the survivors had no hope of replenishing the population, much less rebuilding with such pitiful, injured, and displaced numbers.

All The Sands can do now is bring aid from other worlds.

So welcome to Pulse, new citizen. It's all up to you now.
